Address

To set up a policy or to check or change existing details we need the address. That includes the postcode. As usual we get greeted with a multitude of answers when we ask for the address.

‘It’s number 5 The Street.’

‘It’s number 10.’

‘It’s London.’

‘I live in Scotland.’

‘It’s CF4 1QQ.’

‘I’m just up the road from you.’

‘I don’t know what the address is.’

The last one is the best. I’ve had that a few times often from landlords who want to insure a property they rent out. Not knowing the address does not bode well for the tenants I’m thinking.

Uh huh!

The amount of people who call us who don’t know how to say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ is monumental. We get greeted with a ‘uh huh’ far to frequently. And this is usually people who have English as a first language.

I find it quite shocking that so many people either don’t have a grasp on their own language, or are just too lazy to use it correctly.

‘Are you the homeowner?’

‘Uh huh.’

‘What type of property is it?’

‘Uh huh.’

‘Would you like the policy number?’

‘Uh huh.’

‘Am I speaking to an ape?’

I Have A Photo

A recent customer began to tell me that she had got a new boiler installed but she wasn’t at all happy. She was the homeowner, but whether she had purchased the boiler herself or had it installed under a government scheme I do not know.

She told me that she didn’t like the look of this boiler. She said it was working perfectly fine, but she did not like the look of it.

‘I want to speak to someone about this boiler.’ She demanded. ‘It looks horrible. I have a photo of it here.’

Well, firstly I can’t see the photo down the phone. Secondly I’m sure the boiler manufacturer will be overjoyed to hear that someone thinks the boiler looks bad. Thirdly, I’m sure the manufacturer will bend over backwards to cosmetically enhance her boiler for her.

I put her through to the manufacturers. I reckon it would make their day.

I wonder if she wanted gemstones added to it, or a smiley face, or perhaps she thought clothes would make it look better?

Meningitis Vaccine

I heard on the news today that they are trying to come to some kind of monetary deal over the new meningitis vaccine. The drug company, Novartis, say they want £75 for the drug while the government say it should be £5. Words can’t describe how appalled I am about this.

I have been very lucky that no one in my family has ever suffered from this terrible disease. But when I see these children on TV who have suffered, and I see families who have lost children to it, I am heartbroken. My heart goes out to these people.

To think that a company can put a price on a child’s life. That the money is more important than a child. This is evil. This is corporation at it’s most corrupt. They disgust me.

There are many conspiracy theories in the world. Here’s a company that wants £75 before it will help save your child’s life. What more proof do you want. Life means nothing to them. They don’t care if a child dies, if a child has to be surgically mutilated for it to survive. After all this is just more experimentation for them. More data to produce more profit.

On their website Novartis states:

‘Our commitment: improving health

We aim to improve global health. Through our business, we make an important contribution to society: we provide healthcare solutions to address the evolving needs of patients and societies worldwide.

Our patients and customers need to trust us and our products. They expect us to do business responsibly and ethically.’

‘Responsibly and ethically’ obviously doesn’t include children.

Here’s another paragraph on their website:

‘Responsible business practices

We strive for high performance with high integrity. It is our conviction that responsible business results in better business.’

They need to look up the word ‘integrity’.

Life is important. In every form in comes in. Imagine the world if we were surrounded by death, destruction, dying. There are parts of the world where this very thing is happening. I don’t know about other people but it makes me realise even more that life is important and should not be priced or pushed aside.

If Novartis were as ethical as want us to think they are, or operated with integrity like they state, then a vaccine for children would be free.

I wonder what pay packets the directors are on. I bet it’s more than £75 – the price of a child’s life.

Serial Numbers

Most if not all appliances have a serial number. It’s a unique code of letters or numbers, or both, that is added to the appliance when it’s manufactured. It helps the producer to track a product for quality control, indicating the model of the appliance, when it was made, and various other details. We often require the serial number to insure an appliance, such as a boiler.

A lady called me a few days ago and offered me the serial number for her boiler. I was expecting to be asked for the model of her boiler, or whether parts were still available. But no. She gave me the serial number expecting me to tell her where the boiler was installed!

As if the manufacture would know where each boiler was going to be installed before they actually sold it. Now that would be something.

Terms And Conditions

We often send the terms and conditions out with our mailing packs so that customers can read the two page document that gives them full information about a product. They then know exactly what they are buying before calling us.

I asked a customer if she had received the terms and conditions from us, regarding a particular policy that she wanted to take out.

‘Yes. I have them.’ She told me after a few seconds of flicking through papers.

Not altogether convinced I asked her if she’d read them.

‘No, but I’ll do it now. It’s only one paragraph.’ She answered confidently.

Well it’s not one paragraph. It’s a two page document. However, I was impressed with the fact that saw it as one paragraph and was able to read it within ten seconds.

Eligibility

We have to check the eligibility of the property before setting up any insurance policy. One of the questions we ask is: ‘What type of property is it?’ We expect a very simple answer, such as: house, flat, bungalow, park home, etc. We very rarely get the simple answer.

‘Detached.’

‘It’s in the middle.’

‘It’s brick built.’

‘It’s three bedroom.’

‘It’s on it’s own.’

‘It’s semi-detached, brick built, four bedrooms, with a pointed roof, built in 1965. And it has a converted loft.’

‘I live here with my wife and kids.’

‘It’s next door to number five.’

‘Oh, you know. It’s a normal home.’

I live for the day when my job is simple.
